Zach Freidhof: Troubadour of Peace - An uplifting blend of folk and soul immersed in Love. 26 years ago, a case of appendicitis brought Zach to the brink of death. During his long recovery, a friend brought him some cassettes to cheer him up. In that moment, Zach was inspired and compelled to bring music into the world. “It felt like I was picked up and put on my path, and so music and performance feel like a sacred gift I get to honor and share.” Over 5,000 performances later, spanning North America, and 41 records written, recorded and released, Zach is still sharing and honoring that gift of music. He’s been awarded the John T. Looney Award for Justice and Peace, and has been invited 3 times to present kirtan (sacred chanting) at the Parliament of World’s Religions.
In addition to being a musician, he is a yogi, meditator, death doula, and community organizer. He co-founded the Big Love Network in his native Ohio, which focuses on environmental and social justice through the lens of neighbor-led neighborhood initiatives involving arts, creativity, community, permaculture, and communication. He recently created Revol Music to celebrate and support local music.
Russell Nelson: “Before I started down the long road to graduate school, forensic science and public service, I was a Music Major in Theory and Composition. I have always liked making up my own music, actually managed to get an album of it out with my friend Ron on YouTube- search under Powder Clause/ First Tracks. Ron got me playing bass with one of Susan’s projects, I got involved with Hootenanny, and next thing you know, here I am.”
Possum Queen: A six-piece Jackson bluegrass band delivering everything from old-time classics to reimagined pop-rock, Motown and originals. Forged from Hootenany meet-ups and Stagecoach Bar jams, the all-strings outfit blends the punk energy of the Violent Femmes they grew up on with modern folk heroes like Sierra Ferrell. Possum Queen features guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass and fiddle, for quick picking and playful harmonies built for dancing.
Many thanks to Susan Jones for producing this event, as well as our event sponsors for continuing to make this event possible. We truly couldn’t do it without you!
